WHERE JEWELRY MEETS WATCHMAKING
Cuff watches are such a lovely type of jewelry that immediately attract attention with just how elegantly and uniquely they’re designed. These watches are a bit different to traditional watches. They sit on the wrist and are usually made of materials such as metal or leather. What’s great about them is that they’re both functional and aesthetic accessories.
Cuff watches have a fascinating history that dates all the way back to the 19th century. Back then, watches were usually kept in pockets or worn on chains. But as time went on, people started wearing their watches on their wrists, and cuff watches suddenly became all the rage. These lovely watches found their way into both men’s and women’s fashion, and over time went through many design evolutions to become a functional part of high fashion and jewelry.
Cuff watches are back in style in the world of luxury watchmaking. Brands are creating bracelets for a new generation of watches, often designed as a solid bracelet with the dial of a traditional watch and encrusted with stones. These jewels have been some of the mostpopular watches of recent years. On the set of the 1963 film Cleopatra, Elizabeth Taylor worea ‘Serpenti’ bracelet watch from the Roman jewelry house Bulgari, while Wallis Simpson preferred the ruby-embellished ‘Cadenas’ watch from the French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels. Elizabeth Taylor and Wallis Simpson’s choosing these watches not only suits their personal style but also showcases the unique designs of the jewelry houses.
At this year’s ‘Watches and Wonders’ event in Geneva, Cartier presented an elegant version of the cuff watch from its new ‘Reflection de Cartier’ collection. In pink gold, as well as three white gold versions and plain yellow gold models; it is a technical marvel that conceals the dial within the opening of a bracelet. When the cuff wraps around the wrist, a countdown reflection is created on the opposite side of the polished gold surface.
Piaget unveiled ‘Essence of Extraleganza’, a luxury jewelry and watch collection in honor of its 150th anniversary. The star of the collection is a magnificent cuff watch adorned with 40 baguette cut Colombian emeralds weighing a total of 26.11 carats. This unique piece is decorated with a mosaic of yellow gold spirals, emeralds and baguette-cut diamonds. The precious stones in this one-of-a kind piece are set into the sides, giving it an original look.
The elegance of this watch with a green enameled dial demonstrates Piaget’s mastery in reappraising its heritage. The collection alsoincludes a ring with a bold design in which a 2.53-carat emerald is balanced by diamonds.
In 1987, Chanel forever changed the vision of the women’s watch with the launch of the ‘Première’ watch, a design that rewrote outdated narratives of what a women’s watch could be. 35 years later, Chanel revisited this icon with the ‘Première Cuff’, a bold and elegant triumph of both design and craftsmanship. A marvel of modernity, the ‘Première Cuff’ is a limited-edition creation of the Maison. As many will immediately recognize, the watch’s octagonal dial is a subtle nod to one of Chanel’s most enduring symbols: the stopper of the legendary number 5 perfume bottle. Taking its shape from the iconic geometry of the Place Vendôme in the heart of Paris, a landmark directly linked to Chanel’s history, and the famous Ritz hotel where Gabrielle Chanel lived for 34 years, this piece of jewelry pays homage to timeless references. But what makes this watch truly unique is its bold bracelet. Evoking the world’s most recognizable shoulder strap, the intertwined leather and steel chain is inspired by Chanel’s iconic ‘2.55’ flap bag, curving around the wrist like the streets surrounding her atelier in Place Vendôme.
