Tasakı debuts the world’s fırst pearl T-shırt at Selfrıdges

Trust Tasaki to elevate the pearl to new, experimental territory. As part of the Japanese jeweller’s 70th anniversary pop-up exhibition, currently running at London’s Selfridges department store, the brand has unveiled the world’s first t-shirt crafted from approximately 20,000 freshwater pearls.

The brainchild of head designer Melanie Georgacopoulos, the incredible ‘Pearl Sculpture’ draws inspiration from one of fashion’s most universal items, the white t-shirt.

Hand sewn over six months, the t-shirt is a statement on the high and low culture of fashion and proposes a fresh way of using pearls, says the brand. It also marks Georgacopoulos’ deep involvement in sculpture and architecture throughout her ten year partnership with Tasaki, as well as her contemporary artworks.

First displayed in Tokyo earlier this year, the ‘Pearl Sculpture’ t-shirt has since toured the world and is now on display at Selfridges within the Tasaki’s ‘Floating Shell’ exhibition pop up, which has now been extended to run until 16th February 2025.
