vacheron constantın presents the grand lady kalla

Vacheron Constantin is bringing back the Grand Lady Kalla a year after its Snow White-like brilliance charmed the watch world. The pristine whiteness, though, has been altered to make way for vibrancy, adding a new chapter to the story of high-jewelry watches that began with Kallista in 1979. The latest offerings keep the beauty and intricacy of the timepiece intact while adding three new interchangeable variations. The latest Grand Lady Kalla variations look resplendent with rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, adorned with 57 faceted, emerald-cut diamonds on the watch and Akoya and onyx pearls on the pendant.

This high-jewelry timepiece features diamonds and colored stones, with each set including four fully gem-set elements that swap without tools. The watch head, a jewel element, a three-row rivière bracelet, and an 85 cm pearl-and-stone sautoir steeped in the charisma of Art Deco put engineering into eternally breathtaking jewels. All of the pieces can be interchanged, offering four different ways to wear them.

The 268-year-old watchmaker has made jewelry watches for women since the early 19th century, with transformable pieces appearing as early as the 1920s. In the latest collection, the sapphire version is set in 18K white gold with about 50 carats of colored stones. The ruby version also comes in 18K white gold, with almost 50 carats of colored stones. For emeralds, the choice of metal is 950 platinum, with about 35.72 carats, since platinum’s tensile strength and untinted white color are better for securing brittle emeralds.

Each version features about 45.66 carats of diamonds in emerald cuts across the set. The sinuous sautoirs feature 112 Akoya pearls to complement the precious stone used in the set. The ruby sautoir also includes pink chalcedony beads, while the emerald version adds chrysoprase beads to balance the white pearls with a dash of color. As for the magical mechanics, the transformation happens through a simple click system requiring no tools. The watch head and jewel element click onto either the bracelet or the sautoir, thanks to hidden locking mechanisms and a concealed crown.

In addition to the mechanism, there is intricate beauty in the details. Each claw is shaped like a branch of the Maltese Cross, Vacheron Constantin’s emblem, so that at the points where four stones meet, a complete cross is formed. Furthermore, the meticulously engineered clasps, fastenings, and even the time-setting crown are seamlessly concealed beneath the stones. Grand Lady Kalla is presented in an elegant box accompanied by a specially designed document holder that contains the designer’s original gouache of the piece and a certificate of authenticity.
